The Problem

Slow, Uneven Field Establishment

Every planting season, Fatherland Farm in Makurdi, Benue State faced a major operational challenge: manually broadcasting rice seed across 120 hectares of farmland. The process depended on large teams of labourers walking the fields by hand, making planting slow, labour-intensive, and highly dependent on individual skill and consistency.

Uneven seed distribution resulted in patchy crop stands, overlaps, and gaps that later translated into inconsistent crop emergence. The lengthy operation also exposed planting to weather-related delays, increasing the risk of missing the optimal planting window and reducing yield potential.

As the farm expanded its production goals, the labour requirements, coordination costs, and operational delays associated with manual broadcasting became increasingly difficult to sustain.

Our Solution

A 2-step Precision Drone Broadcasting

Step 1: Digital Flight Planning

The entire 120-hectare field was digitally mapped, and automated flight routes were generated to ensure systematic coverage. Flight paths were designed with 8-metre route spacing to deliver uniform seed distribution across the entire field.

Step 2: Precision Aerial Seed Broadcasting

Using the DJI Agras T50 equipped with a 50 kg spreader tank, rice seed was broadcast at a calibrated rate of 100 kg/ha. Operating at an altitude of 4–4.5 metres with a spreader speed of 1,200 rpm, the drone maintained consistent seed delivery while minimizing overlaps and skipped areas.

1. Dramatically Faster Planting Operation
